During World Immunisation Week, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana officially launched the world’s largest medical drone delivery service during an inaugural ceremony in the city of Omenako, site of the first of four Zipline drone distribution centres in the country.

The African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) have released a report examining how drones can transform the welfare of agriculture on the continent, “Drones on the Horizon: Transforming Africa’s Agriculture”.

Tanzania has announced that it is launching the world’s largest drone delivery service to provide emergency on-demand access to critical and life-saving medicines. Following a similar partnership with the government of Rwanda last year, the eastern African country has teamed up with Californian company Zipline.

According to South Africa based enterprise-grade drone manufacturer, drones will soon be seen regularly flying over borders= zones, crime hot spots, and city streets, as public safety agencies discover the potential cost-saving benefits and efficiency boosting nature offered by the eye in the sky. The increasing proliferation of UAVs utilised by public services alongside the rise in the consumer drones illustrates the complex structure of the drone market and how it is evolving.

In a warehouse outside of Kigali, Rwanda, 15 drones sit waiting to receive a message. When the text comes in, one loads up and zips off into the sky – on a mission to save a life.

The UK government will fund a trial of drone-based deliveries in Tanzania, using the Silicon Valley start-up called Zipline. The objective of the trial is reduce the time spent sending stocks to health clinics in the country by other transportation means.
