The new Bill will deal with insurance claims if autonomous vehicles are involved in an accident. At present, there are legal obstacles that have prevented these vehicles from being tested widely in the UK; this Bill seeks to remove these obstacles.

Addressing the regulation of autonomous vehicles early on is seen as a benefit to the development of the technology, allowing the legislation to develop alongside the technical side. The timeline for this new legislation is within the few months.

Last year, Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to obtain a fleet of over a hundred research vehicles over the next four years for testing the new technology. In the UK each year, 1.5 million cars are built by manufacturers, with an industry turnover of £71.6 billion.
