Combining cameras with LiDAR and RADAR and ultrasonic sensors, alongside a computer platform signed for easy integration with any automakers’ existing platforms. The potential for level 4 automation is significant as the technology progresses to true autonomy.
Currently level 2 automation is the furthest forward that has been attained. These lower levels of automation present a set of unique obstacles in the testing phase, namely that a human safety driver’s presence is required at all times to take control if necessary. The reaction times of the humans can be very slow due to the self-driving technology’s efficiency. Ford has even said that level 3 might be skipped entirely and this platform from Magna looks like it could provide the solution for level 4.
It remains to be seen how easily this platform will be able to integrate into the autonomous driving technology market, but Magna International is well placed as a supplier and contractor to disseminate this technology far and wide. This, combined with MAX4’s focus on easy integration, means that the speed of self-driving technology’s development has dramatically increased, and the regulations will need to keep up.
